Phew! The last couple of weeks in the Createful studio have been mad PACKED. It’s an exciting time for us in the office, made even better by the fact we can share it with the interns we invite to join the Createful world. For the past two weeks, we’ve had fifteen (yes, fifteen) year-old Olivia with us. With an interest in social media and marketing, she was keen to get stuck in. Christina caught up with Olivia on her last day in the office, to find out what she had to say about her Createful experience.

So, Olivia, how did you end up joining the colourful world of Createful?

Createful was actually the last place I applied to. I was having trouble finding suitable experience and my dad convinced me to send off one more application. I knew that Createful were looking more into social media and video production, so I thought I should give it ago.

Lucky you sent off that last letter! What were your thoughts when you first visited the Createful office?

When I came to the office for my interview, I was really nervous. After seeing the office and seeing how fun, colourful, and calm the atmosphere was, I was excited to start working here and gain experience.

What sorts of things have you been involved in during your time at Createful?

I have been part of filming a promotional video for the company, where I got to film around Bournemouth, which was really fun. I gained a lot of knowledge about video production, and what shots work best for your project. I had such a laugh too! I also got to go to a content marketing workshop. Before I went in, I thought, “Wow, this is going to be so boring”, but it was so amazing and inspirational. I learnt so much about how search engines work and how to reach your audience online as an SME.

I was also involved in the research of a potential client for Createful. This involved analysing their existing social media and their marketing strategy. I really enjoyed doing this, as I knew it was a big opportunity for the company. I felt really valued and part of the team, as they had given me the responsibility of completing this task. I have most recently sat in on a client conference call, which was interesting and I got to make notes. The Tuesday of my second week, I visited the marketingSHOWCASE event with Adrian and Martha in Southampton. This was really interesting and eye-opening, as I learnt a lot about data protection and how to reach your audience. I really liked the journey up there as well, because Adrian and Martha were giving me advice on my future and making me laugh. I will miss them lots when I go.

What’s your favourite thing about being at Createful?

The work is really engaging and is something I would like to do in the future. The people I work with have been really friendly and warm towards me, helping me out with any work or any questions I have. Each day is different and that is what makes it interesting.  I get to take part in everything and learn a multitude of different skills. I remember how nervous I was to start my internship, and now I don’t want to leave. Hopefully there will be an opportunity for me to come back during the holidays and do another week, as the experience I have gained has been really valuable to me.

What are your colleagues like?

Everyone is amazing! I feel so welcome. I thought that everyone would just see me as just an intern and that I would feel isolated from office life, but it is the complete opposite. I have made some great workmates who I can laugh with and produce excellent work with. They have even trusted me with making the morning coffee, which was nerve-racking. I will really miss them once my placement is finished. I will miss how Christina always asks how I am in the morning, Dwayne shouting “HUMP DAYYY” every Wednesday, Martha being a good friend and making me laugh, Adrian with his wise words, being someone who I could turn to with any questions or worries, and being an absolute legend, and of course, Toby, who offered me the interview and gave me the internship. Sophie was my first friend and let me help film the company welcome video, and and taught me how to edit videos. There are little things and quirks about everyone that I will miss.

That’s really lovely to hear, we’re so please you’ve enjoyed your work experience! What skills have you learnt during your time here?

I have learnt a lot about putting together a research document and how to use Adobe Premiere CC Pro, which is really going to help me with my media coursework at school where we have to create our own music videos. I’ve also learnt what goes into securing a pitch, and how to interact with a client professionally, which I think is a great skill to have.

I think the most important thing I have learnt here is the process of creating a product that always keeps the client in mind. It is very important to maintain a reputation for being trustworthy and  creative.

What do you hope to do when you leave school?

Once I have finished my GCSEs, I hope to go to college and do a media or media marketing course. After that, university in either Bournemouth or Bristol. I hope to travel as well!

What are your thoughts on the digital industry?

Social media is very much prevalent, especially when your target audience is my generation (13-17). It is quickly becoming one of the biggest advertising mediums, and I think because of the way times are changing, brands need to be using it to network and promote their organisation and products. My age group is so tuned into the world of social media, and adapt to the changes very quickly, whereas people older than me might not adapt as quickly. That is why we need to be bringing more people like me and my peers into this business, to tap into digital market and go on to teach the older generation.

What is your favourite social media platform, and why?

My favourite social media platforms are Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook. They are surprisingly where I get a lot of my news from. It is also where I see advertisements for clothing websites, make-up brands and new apps.

What’s the most valuable thing you’ve learnt during your work experience?

I have loved working here, I am reluctant to go back to school. An important thing you guys have taught me is to have confidence in your skills and your worth, if you put your head down, work hard and be brave, you can achieve great things. This is a powerful message which I will take with me for the rest of my life. I have loved working with the Createful team, and I hope that one day, they will have me back!
